Artist Bio:

In Karen Ford’s quest to connect with her ancestral heritage, she has always been drawn to Asian ceramics; in particular porcelain. In her work, she honors this melding of beauty and function and the strong role Asian ceramics have played in culture and in ritual.

She took her first pottery class over a decade ago and has been enamored with clay ever since. She sees the potter’s wheel as a vehicle that enables her to join movement and spontaneity. She prefers simple shapes and steers clear from fussy decoration because she believes the marriage between clay, form and glaze speaks for itself.

Karen’s current work is a collaboration between clay, fire and glass. Small bits of glass melt during the glaze firing leaving a “pool” of translucent color in the bottom of the bowls. These small puddles of glass fuse with the glaze leaving a smooth surface. They can be gem-like, reminiscent of semi-precious stones or ice formations. Each firing yields different results so replication is next to impossible.

Her functional serving pieces are meant for sushi and other communal foods and, when not in use, make stunning display pieces. Karen hopes to enhance the everyday ritual of eating by making it a beautiful and unique experience.

What’s a dibble?????

A garden dibble is a very simple garden tool that is marked at 1-inch intervals and is used for bulb planting, seed planting and transplanting. Simply push the tip of the tool into the earth to the correct depth and drop the seed or bulb into the hole. Signed by the artist.
